The deer I shot was the local “king of the forest”.
I had seen three other smaller bucks on my trail cam for the previous month. All at night except one four point buck that looked to be about 2 1/2 years old. He had stood right in front of me the previous week. But I passed on him.
I had also seen a couple six pointers. Probably 3 1/2 year olds. Again only at night on the cam.
This 9 pointer I also had only seen on the camera at night. Until 6:30 am two Saturdays ago. That morning he was following a young doe. He was all rutted up. His neck all swelled up. Thinking with the little head cost him his life.
The guy at the place I took to process it thought he was either 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 years old.
I am going Friday morning to pick up the meat. I am going to get him mounted. He is the largest deer I have ever shot and found.
Oh come on. The reason we thin the herd is because thousands of deer would starve to death in the winter snow.
Congrats on a good kill....Eat a slice of backstrap for me....
