A friend of mine made a midlife career change. I’ll him Joe. Joe took out some loans, then back to college to get a degree teaching math. He was hired at a Virginia middle school.
At the end of his first year, the principal called him in.
The conversation went something like this:
Principal: Joe, you’ve done a good job here. But we’re going to have to let you go.
Joe: Why???
Principal: Your student test scores are terrible.
Joe: But most of my students only speak Spanish, and I don’t speak Spanish. Plus their attendance was poor. It was very difficult to teach those students.
Principal: I know. It’s not your fault. But someone has to take the blame.
Joe quit the profession in disgust. Last I heard, he was working at U-Haul.
Math teachers are in extremely short supply in the US and there are thousands of districts across the US that have very low percentages of non English speaking students.
Just research the demographics of any district and apply accordingly.
Should be a law. No one should be fired because they don’t speak the language of the invaders.
