I guess my point is that none of us really know about Trump's relationship with God except for him and the Lord. I backslide all the time too. Not as publicly As Trump, but would be lost without the Lord's grace to let me try again.
Or Trump might see it as the “method to his madness”.
There is a difference between backsliding, and not being saved.
Even good, solid, otherwise morally upright people (perhaps even more upright than most Christians!) might not be saved because they haven’t trusted in Christ alone.
Trump himself has never testified to the Gospel the way say Rubio or Hegseth have. It’s not that Rubio and Hegseth are better people, but you can tell by “the word of their testimony” that they have received Christ.
To the contrary, the president has made clear that he still believe it comes down to works and that he can’t be certain of his eternity. Multiple recent interviews. And his honesty should be appreciated!
