“Give them a fish and feed them for a day.
Teach them to fish, and they can feed themselves for a lifetime.” (Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie)
Build a man a fire, and he stays warm for a day.
Set a man on fire, and he stays warm for the rest of his life.
-Terry Pratchett
That may have made sense decades ago, but now it costs real money to fish or hunt, and there are limits on catch. There was a time in my memory, where I could fish in Puget Sound and keep anything I caught to eat. Paying only for a license for lakes and streams. Then the government gave all the fishing rights to Natives, and non-natives cannot survive without breaking the law. I often lived on my catch in my younger days, picked brush and sold it off of public lands. Even worked in tree farms for Christmas, made wreaths etc. Now the brush pickers are illegals, and the christmas tree farms are tended by illegals.
