I had a beagle cross who chewed the tops of her paws until the were bald. Then a staff infection set in. She had severe allergies. After a shot of steroids and anti-biotics, we put her on Apoquel. That seemed to be the most effective antihistamines.

Just for kicks I asked AI about your Beagle's paw chewing issue. It took AI one second to come up with the culprit and this was AI's #1 answer below.

In addition, AI also provided dozens of pages on how to treat this condition and included mentioning Apoquel, the drug your vet prescribed for the dog.

It also listed many other ways to treat this condition including other various drugs and recommended home remedies as well.

1. Allergies

This is one of the most frequent culprits, especially in breeds like Beagles. Environmental allergens (e.g., pollen, grass, dust), food sensitivities, or contact irritants can cause itching, leading the dog to chew for relief. It might be seasonal or year-round. Signs: Redness, swelling, or excessive licking focused on the paws and sometimes ears.

Those who discount AI do so at their own risk. They're putting many billions into advanced AI development for good reason.
