Political scientists at Harvard said Democratic victories in last week’s off-cycle elections were a sign of powerful backlash to Donald Trump’s presidency, but that Democrats could not afford to rest on their laurels ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Tuesday’s elections added new fuel to debates over whether Democrats could best strengthen their coalition by shifting to the center or embracing their party’s left wing.
Moderates Sherrill and Spanberger wielded their congressional experience and military and intelligence backgrounds to win governor’s seats. But Mamdani secured the New York City mayor’s office after running an unapologetically progressive campaign.
Some Harvard faculty said Sherrill, Spanberger, and Mamdani likely succeeded by running on platforms that emphasized voters’ day-to-day concerns and maintaining strong ground games.
Harvard Kennedy School professor Stephen Goldsmith, who previously served as deputy mayor of New York City and mayor of Indianapolis, said candidates’ focus on quality of life issues made “a really big difference.”
“People care about those issues,” Goldsmith said. “City and state residents expect from their governors and mayors pragmatic execution of the basic foundation of government. All three of these — Virginia, New Jersey and New York — were individuals who were committed to improving the quality of life.”
McKenna wrote that the Mamdani campaign was particularly effective at mobilizing membership-based groups to win back constituencies that had swung to the right in the 2024 elections.
She pointed to an exit poll by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Asian American Federation that suggested 20 percent of Mamdani’s voters had backed Trump in 2024.
Levitsky said last week’s elections were the strongest sign so far that Democrats were able to rebound from their across-the-board loss to Trump and his party in 2024.

Democrats winning in democrat areas is a rebound?
They play the role of The Washington Generals.
How did they become “deep Blue States”? For a long time New Jersey was a Repub stronghold/swing State post WWII until the Sink Emperor came along.
Demographics is destiny.
New Jersey is one of the most suburban and most educated states in the U.S.
Highly educated suburbs (especially in the Northeast Corridor) have shifted Democratic nationwide since the 1990s.
Key areas that moved blue:
North Jersey suburbs (Essex, Bergen, Hudson)
Central Jersey suburbs (Middlesex, Mercer, Somerset)
Philly suburbs on the Jersey side (Camden, Burlington)
NJ has a large public-sector workforce:
Teachers
Police
Transit workers
Government employees
About 23–25% of New Jersey’s population is foreign-born (i.e. immigrants):
Sorry, phone posting....”..an appeal their” = ...and appeal to to their sensibilities.
We’re not going to be competitive in New Jersey unless we offer more benefits. And yes, increase the size of the government.
What a load of bunk! Much of the electorate for these crackpots was mass imported from abroad. Another part was ginned up by overly credentialed downwardly mobile, DEI grifters. The same ilk that has $250,000 of student load debt but is unfit anything beyond bartending or Door Dash.
The growing federal behemoth in Northern Virginia was also a factor. They view bloated sinecure GS-12, GS-13 and GS-14 jobs as a fundamental right.
So called “affordability” is a mirage. It was mere grist for the fake news mafia. Hatred and plunder, driven by changes in demography, was the root cause of the Democratic sweep.
This article took three people to author. Rush always said the more authors, the more lies.
hmm, even with so very many moved out of NYC, they still had rather large number of votes counted compared to last 12 or so Mayoral elections.
Hakem Jefferies scares the hell out of me....Talk about Hitler , Stalin and Castro, he fits the mold perfectly.
uh huh.
Steve Bannon called Zohran Mamdani a “genius” and his campaign a smart playbook for Democrats moving forward and a warning to Republicans.
IMO, it was more what have you done for me lately. No denying prices are up, Trump touts they are going down, as in the percent increase. True, but the “voters” expect them to go back to before Bidumb was president. Not going till the dollar begins going up in value and we get rid of the free loaders that bidumb let in. One other thing that works against DJT is consumer debt.
Most everyone is tapped, bad, worse is they cannot get more debt and have to pay 20+percent on their current debts. A similar measure is the car business. Many are so upside down on their car loans, there is no way to buy another car on finance. So, what we have is prices going up, even though much lower than before, stagnant wages due to illegal immigration in the most part, and reduced discretionary spending. IOW, everything seems unaffordable i.e. I have no spare money.
The modern democrat party is evil. Give them no quarter.
THE Dems purposes shut down the govt
so Gov union goons vote in force .
These non stop ridiculous psych ops extragerated
hit pieces are meant todepress the Gop base .
are you calling me a name or what?
Jews overwhelmingly vote democrat. That’s just a fact.
Israel had zip to do with those elections, except the democrats are anti Netanyahu anyway.
