I’d lock myself in a steel cage to protect myself from any of THAT!

Probably because people who are cooped up together may get violent with each other. Don’t need guns with a bunch of high strung cooped up folk.

Didn’t the bears know how hard the Canadians have worked to protect them?

No gratitude.

I almost got punched by a guy who took offense to me telling him he should get his 5 year old a little more than 20 feet away from a 8 foot alligator. I was like ok, I’ll get the popcorn.

I don’t know what could stop them...

They're not bullet proof: 12ga w slug/buckshot, .44 mag, .357 mag, .308, .300 min mag, just about any Weatherby mag caliber, etc., but as someone else pointed out probably not bear spray,

Tim Treadwell was an idiot

Absolutely, and he convinced his girlfriend to come with him and she got eaten too.

One reason that the polar bear population is up is that hunting them was greatly restricted

Tim had serious issues. He thought he was friends with the grizzlies and he was their friend too.

There weren’t many hunters to begin with. They’ve just flourished.

Well, dunno about that. Think we could also equally say they could have been hungry.

“Does anybody else remember that?”

I remember the incident but not the joke. Sadly, the bears were killed.

His mother said her son’s death could have been avoided if precautions, like fencing, were installed by the company that operated the outpost, Nasittuq he was not a moron.

Amen to the bison comment.

In the 80’s (I live just north of YNP) a French photographer gave his camera to another tourist so he could take a photo of Mr. Frenchie next to a bison.

The photo, slightly blurry, was of the bison removing the Frenchman’s head (which travelled 30+ feet).

IIRC the bear in question was quite old, and some video Treadwell took showed it acting in very unusual (ie., pre-predatory) manner towards him. Of course, Mr. Nature thought he was some old broken-down has-been bear - not understanding that desperate old predators that can't compete for the usual fare will get... inventive with their cuisine.

The guide that went in and found the evidence, and eventually shot the bear was a little freaked out as that old griz was hunting him in the tight cover as well, 'knowing' he was an easy snack.

Luckily, I believe the guide/easy-snack was packing a .458 Winchester and that two or three shots from that took care of business.
