The problem is for many there is this unspoken but obvious belief that there is no hope for anything other than some nihilistic scenario, because there is no "alternative" to Hamas, that the population is irreparably brainwashed, and the PLO is equally bad. So you can guess where that line of logic ultimately leads. Which is awful. And to be fair, the neighboring Arab countries like Jordan don't seem interested in taking control even if offered - either.
But I think Trump has been doing the right thing.
It’s like the problem with Iran’s nukes. Everyone knows they are an existential threat, but the cost of doing something about them was so high and so frightening that they, everyone, looked for any and every possible alternative to direct action. Only when Iran was launching swarms of ballistic missiles anyway did the risk-reward equation seem acceptable.
Similarly in Gaza. Hamas has brought nothing but misery and war to both Israelis and Arabs. But the cost of getting them out has seemed so impossibly high that there was no political will to go in and get them out. Even now, after most of the cost has been paid (in blood and rubble), the political will to finish them is flagging.
Trump’s plan to bring in basically the Gulf States to help seems unworkable but when again you consider the obvious alternative I suppose it’s worth it to let Trump have a go at it. But I don’t think anything good happens while Hamas is still functional.
