I’ll repeat SunkenCiv, who at least skimmed the story and self edited the NY Post ‘writer’s grammar challenged headline

“shoots dead” as in shot it dead.

Most of us that comment about these bad headlines are fully aware of what was intended but that doesnt make the alternative interpretation any less funny.
