Here’s another point - the go fast boats coming out of Venezuela have only 24km to reach the Island of Aruba [ a Netherlands protectorate ], and then on to the rest of the island chain up to Puerto Rico where the drugs are easily moved into the US.
This makes it very difficult for Coast Guards to spot, interdict and capture. The boats move mostly at night, and they can get lost in shore based radar sea clutter. Plus the GGs must check out every boat that comes north including sports fishermen and yachties, Much better to use military radars both ship board and air to search for go fasts.
The drug boats usually have other boats that act as look outs, decoys and refuelers. CGs just do not have the manpower and resources to interdict all of the go fast drug runners.
Thus narco-terrorists need to be blow up. Catching them to give them “due-process” is a near impossible job. Thus boom they go.
