Pitchers in the National League were able to handle it for 100 years with no extra warmup time between innings.

Yeah, but they hardly made it on-base.

The umpire announcer they had said that there is a rule for "umpire discretion" if the pitcher was the third out, or if the pitcher was on-base at the end of the inning. In those cases, they gave the pitcher a few extra minutes to get loose.

I don't think that happened a lot in the the regular season in the National League. Most pitchers struck out or were replaced with pinch-runners if they made it to base.
