Of course the two circumstances are different, but whenever the issue of firing on U.S. citizens is considered, the events at Kent State become influential. Of course whenever the Guard is fired upon, return fire is essential. This is the first instance currently of the Guard being fired upon.
When the Guard are in a role of assisting the police, they do not necessarily need to be armed - but obviously IF they are fired upon, either a police arm or a Guard QRF must attempt to reestablish order.
