I want to point out that Musk has preliminary identified where to cut in his initial proposal for DOGE. What actually got cut was limited by political issues, including strong push-back by Democrats.

He cut a couple of hundred billion in a matter of weeks but cutting the rest is going to take some time

You can only push so far so fast - and not just due to politics alone. You have to consider the economic and practical aspects of cutting 20% of the Federal budget overnight

He didn’t exaggerate the potential - he and his DOGE crew just didn’t have the authority to actually effect the changes they identified as being needed...politicians on both sides of the aisle stopped the efforts.
