Capt. von Stephanitz reported in 1925 that the shepherd dog was bred specifically to perfect a more efficient gait than the wolf (especially the Polish flavor). More to your errant point, he speaks of the differences in skull shape differentiating the shepherd dog back to the Bronze Age, what he calls "C. Poutiatini" pp33.
You are talking to one who has had Dutch Shepherds for 30 years and really hates what modern breeding is doing to that type.

"German Shepherds were coveted as "germanische Urhunde," [German primordial dogs] being close to the wolf, and became very fashionable during the Nazi era. Adolf Hitler acquired a German Shepherd named "Prinz" in 1921, during his years of poverty, but he had been forced to lodge the dog elsewhere. However, she managed to escape and return to him. Hitler, who adored the loyalty and obedience of the dog, thereafter developed a great liking for the breed. Hitler kept several more of the breed, including Blondi, who was among several dogs in the 'Führerbunker' during the Battle of Berlin at the end of the Second World War.
