Yankees and Red Sox fans were even more passionate back in the '70s. I know second hand that Brooklyn Dodgers fans were back in the '40s and '50s. Losing the team was a very big deal that broke the heart of the borough.
Some college programs (Penn State, Notre Dame, Alabama) have had intense fanatical followings forever.
Outside of WW I, the 1919 Black Sox scandal was the biggest news that year, bigger than an incapacitated president. Some sports (boxing, real wrestling, horse racing) used to be a VERY big deal, with culture shaping followings.
The only thin I can think of tht's different is that the NFL managed to find a way to get a lot of women interested in the action. That, and leglaized sports book gambling over most of the country. I do not know how the gambling will play out, only that it won't be good.

I remember when America was obsessed with pro sports, schools even allowed us to bring our transistor radios for the World Series.

I remember when probably all athletic sports gear used in the USA was made in the USA.
