The real scandal is the cost of college.

It's a government subsidized and supported racket.

Remove all government financial involvement in college including loans, grants, loant guarantees, etc. and watch them slim down and reduce tuition..

Government involvement in the loan process has distorted the marketplace.

Remove government student loan guarantees and banks and other lending institutions will go back to making student loans based on good business practices.

Government money is what enables coleges to build inflated staffs and to over-pay administrators and teaching staff.

I have two points to make one this.

First, what was her major? Was it in a field that would bring value to an employer, or just one of those studies degrees?

Second, even if it was in employable skills, we can pin this on the free traitors and their obsession with cheaper prices by offshoring. I don't have any sympathy for the students who got into debt for their studies degrees, but many students learned technical skills yet still can't find work because of all of the offshoring. I know a few.

Forget repealing the 19th Amendment as some here have suggested. The real people who should be blocked from voting are the free traitors who supported sending those jobs out of the country.

“Lets go even further with that. No one gets to vote unless they can demonstrate a positive net worth considering all debt including the mortgage on their stupid overpriced house.”

Absolutely!

When my son graduated he had about $30,000 in college loans. Most were to me, some to a bank.

(I don’t believe it to be my responsibility to fund college. I will loan them the money interest free but they must repay it.)

He earned a degree in an actual science field that gave him a career and a good salary. (as you did)

When he graduated, he and a bunch of friends rented a large house together and got jobs in their fields. His $30,000 was paid off within a year. Then he bought a better car.

The house had a succession of graduates living there over the 4-5 years he stayed. But they were all smart with their money and careers.

That’s part of what I was getting at. Offshoring and importing hordes of cheap foreign labor ie H1Bs and other work visas stole American jobs and undermined the bargaining power American workers by undercutting their wages. So the payoff for a college degree has not been as good as it was a couple generations ago.

At the same time the cost of that degree has risen substantially faster than inflation. So younger grads are getting squeezed on both ends. Now add in the much higher cost of housing and they’re really getting screwed.

Its easy to say she should have known better. True, but I blame universities which saw fit to get bloated with expensive administrators and politicians for enacting policies that screwed over American workers in favor of corporations/shareholders a lot more than I blame teenagers for believing what had up until a generation or so ago had always been good advice (pursue a college degree). Teenagers are naive and easily influenced by authority figures like teachers/professors.

Anyone who gets a student loan should be required to take a basic economics class.

In one sense, this is sad. Universities sucker dimwits into spending a fortune on useless degrees. The students then graduate with a huge loan burden and can’t make the money to pay it off. So then politicians demagogue to eliminate student debt. This woman is stupid but the real villain is the universities who charge a fortune for nothing.

Perhaps the FTC could sue all the colleges/universites that claimed that for false advertising and heap on RICO chargers, then confiscate some or all of their endowments to recover the defaulted loan amaounts. I hear the self-styled Ivy league members have billions parked. cover the defaults out of that.

In fairness, she should get a refund for the tuition. Wonder what her degree was in?
