The Moai statues still have many mysteries. Some have writing on the backs of them. Done in the Rongo-rongo script we can not, as yet, read. Those inscriptions may well answer many questions.

Māori language had no written form before European contact; instead, important information was passed down through oral traditions, memorized rhymes, formulaic storytelling and other methods like carving and weaving. A written version using the Latin alphabet was developed around 1820 with the help of missionaries.
