With two of the four remaining playoff-contenders, the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners, being among the five teams (Padres/Rays/Rockies) which still have never won a World Serious, I thought a quick look-back is in order at all the recent first-time champions, including three of the most recent eight years:
2023 TEXAS RANGERS
2019 WASHINGTON NATIONALS (nee MONTREAL EXPOS)
2017 HOUSTON ASTROS
2002 ANAHEIM ANGELS
2001 ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
1997 FLORIDA MARLINS
1992 TORONTO BLUE JAYS
1980 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES *
1985 KANSAS CITY ROYALS
1969 NEW YORK METS
1966 BALTIMORE ORIOLES (nee ST. LOUIS BROWNS) *
1955 BROOKLYN DODGERS *
* The Dodgers, Orioles and finally the Phillies were the last of the original sixteen franchises to win it all--all the others listed above were expansion clubs begun in 1961 or later. After the Dodgers, the next most recent were the 1935 Tigers (Ty Cobb was never a world champion), 1926 Cardinals, 1924 Senators, 1923 Yankees (watch out for these guys!), 1920 Indians, 1919 Reds, 1914 Braves (the "Miracle Braves"), 1910 Athletics, 1909 Pirates, 1907 Cubs (the winningest team ever), 1906 White Sox (the "Hitless Wonders"), 1905 Giants, and 1903 Red Sox.
Several teams have appeared in so many World Series that they have impeded other clubs:
YANKEES 41
DODGERS 22
GIANTS 20
CARDINALS 19
ATHLETICS 14
RED SOX 13
However, in the past decade all but the Dodgers are spinning their wheels, allowing teams who have never won to step up to the plate.
agreed
Oh the pain, this weekend.
🤣🤣. Phillies also, but our payroll is much bigger than yours
You guys had a bad week, too, I see.
Tell me about it. Still 4 and 2 for both.
Yep, there are really no dominant teams anymore, it’s just a matter of surviving the long season.
Hey, the wings won 2 in a row! /s
It would be fine with me if the Yankees never again win the World Series. :)
Go Seahawks!!! :-D
My great grandfather went to Wrigley Field all the time. He was widowed and he met his second wife there.
He never liked the Dodgers.
My grandpa took me to Angel games in Anaheim. PCL Angels had been LA’s team and I think he stuck with them as the major league team even after the Dodgers came.
The Yankees were in first place in the AL East by a wide margin when the strike occurred.
