I read the book and saw the movie back in the 60s and never even considered any of it racist. I thought the English actor who played Dr. No was kind of funny looking, but that was just a lousy make up job.

I read some of the classic Bond novels and short stories about a year ago. Must confess that they were full of blatant racism and sexism that likely would shock and offend many young/contemporary readers. I’m fine with giving the readers a heads up, and expecting them to deal with it rationally (i.e., not emotionally).

Students need to learn that texts reflect the times when they were written, that culture evolves, and that some things they consider normal now will seem outrageous after 50+ years of social change. Censorship, bowlderizing, and cancelling leaves us “unburdened by what has been” but also ignorant (even if Kamala thinks that is great, it’s not).
