The 600 year gap between the end of Teotihuacan and the arrival of the Aztecs in Mexico makes this a bit of a stretch.

Not at all, that’s not much of a gap. The hypothesis can only be confirmed or not when the writing is cracked, which probably will happen quickly, now that there’s a depth in the field of study of Mesoamerican writing.

Also, by “rudimentary language” the writer of the story should have said “rudimentary writing system”. Obviously they had language.
