Two packed Delta jets “absolutely smashed” into each other on the runway at LaGuardia Airport Wednesday night, according to authorities and terrified passengers — destroying a plane’s nose and ripping off a large part of a wing.
The saga unfolded when the wing of an aircraft carrying 32 people that was departing for Roanoke, Virginia, suddenly collided with the fuselage of an aircraft arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina, with 61 people aboard just before 10 p.m., Delta said in a statement.
“Their right wing clipped our nose and the cockpit. We have damage to our windscreen and… some of our screens in here,” one pilot could be heard saying in air traffic control audio.
A huge part of a jet’s wing was also torn off.

Yes.
Because ATC tells pilots exactly where to stop on taxiways.

Enjoy your flight. /s/s
“”No, on the taxiway. Big difference in speed. One was stationary, the other, with the broken wing was moving at taxi speed.””
Right! Looks like one holding on taxiway after landing, one departing...a passenger remarked about a jolt AFTER landing...Someone wasn’t paying attention!
“Driving still seems the best way to go.”
That seemed to be the best idea for a very long time. Then we just learned about all the non-English-speaking illegals driving big rigs in the lanes next to us at 70MPH. 😡🤯
I’ve always wanted an auto gyro.
How did this happen? There are lines painted on the ground for the pilots to follow plus they should be looking out their window as should the tower controllers.
Flightradar can see the planes approaching so why not those at the airport? Why did the pilot stick his nose onto an active runway?
Did a manager allow some controller to take the day off so “Bob” has to handle double duty?
Why isn’t there radar on the ground plus gps on the airplanes so the exact locations are known with loud warning sound and red lights going off if paths cross?
My cellphone can track me down to where I live and there are apps that will tell you where you are while on the move and the history of your travel.
The cbs report puts their graphics right over the damage....

“”From what I can tell from the video, the aircraft on the taxiway did not hold short,””
I watched it a couple of times and I agree...the pilot had to be blind not to see one getting ready for takeoff...
Loves me some Di Ver Si Ty! Get some.
Only exceeded by some of their friends in the friendly skies.
That’ll buff right out.
When I was in aviation maintenance Quality control we used a tool called “The Swiss Cheese Model” to mitigate defects.
-
It may have very well prevented this mishap.
-
Overview of the Swiss Cheese Model
The Swiss Cheese Model is a risk management tool used to understand how accidents occur in complex systems. It was developed by James T. Reason and illustrates that multiple layers of defense exist to prevent failures. Each layer is represented as a slice of Swiss cheese, with holes symbolizing weaknesses or vulnerabilities.
-
Key Components
Layers of Defense
Slices of Cheese: Each slice represents a different layer of defense within an organization.
Holes: The holes in the cheese signify potential failure points. These holes vary in size and position across different slices.
-
Mechanism of Failure
-
Failures occur when the holes in each slice align, allowing a hazard to pass through all layers of defense. This alignment creates a “trajectory of accident opportunity,” leading to an incident.
As a former air traffic controller, I am amused, that so many people can’t tell the difference between a runway and a taxiway. An aircraft may be loading passengers at the gate, and they call it the runway. I do have to wonder, however, if the ground controller was using ASDE? My son, when he flies his USAF aircraft, can see the entire airfield on his computer screen. It helps them avoid situations described in this article.
I can’t rule out DEI as a cause. Is there anything in the article that suggests that it played a role in this particular case? Yes or no, time will tell.
I worked as a civilian in the DoD. When I came in there were a few minority individuals and women in positions of responsibility. They fully deserved it. They came in before affirmative action. Initially affirmative action and EEO did not seem to do much harm. However, the longer it persisted, the worse things got.
Sometimes people focus on the deserving people who do not get promoted. Sometimes people focus on the undeserving people who do get promoted. One thing that may not be visible is the changing attitude of average workers who see what’s happening.
In all cases, the effectiveness of the organization is eroded. Cutting or eliminating an organization now almost certainly does less harm than it would have done in prior decades.
As an P-3A/B/C aircrewman with a bit over 5000 flt hours, we knew about this Swiss Cheese Model. The end result we would refer to as a cascading failure. I personally witnessed the result of this as a P-3A crashed into the Subic Bay due to cleaning fluid in the water injection tanks for the T56A-10W engines. My crew was on the ramp preflighting when it happened. Everything went to ground stop at that point. Our AC had the same cleaning fluid load. I don’t remember the actual accident investigation report, but I do remember that the cleaning fluid was incorrectly stored co-located with the water injection “barrels” (1st failure). Inexperienced maintainers took the wrong stuff, topped up the AC tank(s) with cleaning fluid (2nd failure). Resulting in failure of all four engines over Olongapo and the pilot nursed the “glider” to the bay (Final step in the cascading failure). Fortunately/unfortunately only one crewman died. It was a very bad day...
THAT IS GOING TO LEAVE A MARK——
Isn’t airplanes like these fuel storage in the wings ?

Yes.
Worked transports in air force.
DOGE. Trump. Big Balls.
Landing in any major airport in the ISA looks like you’ve just landed in Africa. Airports are job programs for illiterate Somalis it seems.
The state and the NYNJ Port Authority spent $8 billion to modernize La Guardia - always considered too small of a footprint of available land for runways and taxiways.
I saw it just start to creep in to my days as a firefighter. Mostly for unqualified weak women. Everyone was expected to pick up the slack for the DEI women which took the positions of a physically strong man. So basically we would be short staffed, and worse, had to not be “manly” on the calls lest the poor darlings would have their feeling hurt. The women would be promoted in record time to positions of power and destroyed morale. There was endless training from the state about how evil we men were and how we needed to keep our mouths shut and pretend to be happy about it.
Maybe there was no ignition source.
Remember the Dulles Helicopter/ Commercial Airliner accident?
“No aircrew loss of life”...That’s because we were from an ere that didn’t look at all the dei crap. If you couldn’t stand the pressure of stand up or fly, you were out. There were little bits of dei in the flying world but they were eventually weeded out. I have been retired for almost ten years and towards the end, the dei stuff started to stick on the aviation side.
