That was exactly my experience. In the early 1990’s, AIDS was a very scary condition to most straight people. I did as I always do and read as much as I could find about it and understood that it was acquired by contact with body fluids and I could protect myself from that kind of exposure. Week after week, the patients in the House said that their families had abandoned them, which you confirmed was your experience.
My son was born two years into that volunteer job and the last year was HARD. After three years, I had lost 17 men to AIDS, some after only one week of sitting and talking and keeping them company. That was my “job”. But after losing so many people, I became somewhat jaded about humanity because family members would only appear after his death to ask for his TV or trinkets. They never once asked about the man who was their brother/son/uncle. They just wanted his “stuff”, and I knew from the patient that none of the family had visited since his admission into the House.
After three years, and crying all the way home for four weeks in a row, I knew my own expiry date had come and it was time for me to rejoin the living in a very big way, so I had to quit. Toughest job I ever did, aside from being a parent, and I strongly suspect you completely understand why it was so tough.
Used to hold Rundgren in high esteem, not too crazy about his newer efforts tho.
Bought all his albums thru the 70’s plus I kept abreast of what other bands/albums he produced and many were successful like Grand Funk, Were An American Band, Badfinger’s Straight Up and the Meatloaf LP.
