I can’t find any evidence that performers used to pay to be the halftime performer for the super Bowl. There was a time the NFL struggled to get a show for halftime. It wasn’t until 1993 when Michael Jackson performed that the modern idea of a halftime show started.

I’m old enough to remember Up With People. 49ers/Bengals 1982.

Chubby Checker was 1988, 'New Kids On The Block' "performed" in 1991, and Gloria Estefan in 1992.

After MJ there was a series of pretty good half time shows. Including The Rolling Stones, The Who, U2, Bruce Springstein Prince and a few others. Basically very famous classic rock n roll bands.
Then the last few years the acts have all been woke or trying to appeal to a crowd that typically doesn’t watch the NFL.

I posted this on another FR thread this morning about this Bad Bunny person.
“In Living Color” had a show coincide with the Super Bowl halftime at least one or two years back when their show was at the top of the ratings. This was back when Jim Carey and Jamie Fox were on their show. Plus the Wayan’s brothers were also very funny. The show was NOT WOKE. It was okay to make fun of flaming gay guys.
