At around 1:45 a.m., the Grand Prairie Police Department responded to a 911 call. But because of a dispatch error, officers went to the wrong house. The homeowner, Thomas Simpson, woke up to his dogs barking, armed himself, and stepped into his garage—only to be met with officers who, according to him, never announced they were police. Within moments, shots were fired, and Simpson was hit in the leg.

Dispatcher needs to be fired, but will probably just be reassigned elsewhere in the police dept
DEI hire, or just plain old incompetent?
Probably a Union member.

Let’s hope this citizen bankrupts the incompetent police department...

Keystone Kops didn't exactly cover themselves with glory this time. Yet another reason I hate autofill/auto corrupt.

Also eight rounds fired, one hit the homeowner in the leg, and the rest ventilated the garage, spray and pray. Now the reaction of the Kops is not of contrition for the mistake, rather it is to seek aggravated assault charges against the homeowner to cover their a$$e$.

Auto completing should be disabled on all 911 computers. Very dumb idea having that function in that venue. That triggered the wrong address dispatch. The Dispatcher should have confirmed match as well if possible meaning what was happening at the actual disturbance elsewhere. That said Cop meaning just one should very loudly and clearly yell POLICE Department before and during entry Several times. Not all of them screaming it but one loud and clear Cop yelling.

That said I never sleep in a completely dark house. I leave a few lights on so I can identify someone if needed and get good aim if needed. Also if an emergency happens like fire I can see to exit with out trying to find a light switch wasting precious time. My house is protected with RTSS to alert me to anyone outside trying to get in. Rat Terrier Security Service is very loud and dependable LOL.

That might be a very good argument to have several motion detector type lights (at least 800 lumens, more depending on location & number of lights — even cheapy “solar” types can often be wirelessly linked, and also several lights independently (from motion sensing) wirelessly controlled.

Dispatch got the house number wrong, pounding at the front door at 1:45 AM.

ARM YOUR SELF. You never open the door, you never go out side, even if you think it is the police. YOU call the police. Get the operator on the line recording what's happening.

They stay out side you stay inside until the issue is resolved.

Happened to me. Knock on my door 1:30AM. Made them let me visually identify them through a window, they did the open the door to talk shtick and I told them I preferred not to put my shot gun down to open the door and told them we could transact any business they had through the door. They were not happy but did not push it.

Don't open the door, don't go out side and if you are apprehensive don't answer the door, call 911.

Absolutely! We have a bunch of solar cams and lights all linked in a mesh WiFi with a battery backup, all are triggered with a motion detector. The feed is immediately sent and stored to a security co. as you know. Despite being rural we a have buried fiber optic internet so that can’t be cut either. Doorbell too. When we first got the property wife was a little rattled by all the gunshots nearby during the day, reminded her it was just target practice from bored retirees. Lots of crime free townships if people look for them.

Excellent post. Gave me cold chills reading it. Glad it worked out.

Long past time to end qualified immunity. You screw up in an official capacity you pay the price including forfeiture of all assets and life in prison without possibility of parole.

The actual housecall address needed help and got none.

These cops did not want this any more than the victim....I hope he sues the city for a billion to use to fix this problem so none of these guys feels this crappy ever again.

Some tax money is good to ‘waste’.

I find it disgusting that this level of incompetence is now the apparent norm.

It's good that their incompetence at getting to the right location is matched by their incompetence at pistol marksmanship.

Every public servant involved in this fiasco needs to be fired, sued, and prosecuted.

These cops did not want this but they're perfectly willing to throw criminal charges at their innocent victim.

This was a response, albiet the wrong one, to a 911 call. This wasn’t a “no-knock” raid based on a warrant.

You are correct, but then it was an even more excessive response. Instead of getting an officer to the site as fast as possible, they pulled together and loaded up the whole SWAT team first and then drove there. The emphasis upon overwhelming deadly force in the name of "officer safety" as driven by police unions has developed way beyond rational bounds. It has created a climate of fear of law enforcement that drives the public into the arms of the left, which then exacerbates crime. It's a nasty spiral of social psychology.

One of the benefits of the "broken window theory" is that it increases the frequency of law enforcement contact before development of emergencies demanding such responses. I think it a better use of resources.

If bad guys lie, and say they are the police, it is a crime if you try to shoot them?

The very fact that bad guys can lie and say they are the police shows that the police are doing far too many no-knock night-time raids!

If the police were operating properly in this area, most citizens would know "Real cops don't do this."

“Long past time to end qualified immunity.”

Yes! If we are to be a nation of laws then no one should be above the law. Furthermore, the persons responsible should be the ones to pay the price. Even if the courts do find for the victims, the perpetrators never pay. The burden falls on all the people in the area that pay property taxes. The city of Fairbanks, Alaska is now trying to figure out where to come up with the 3.3 million to pay for a failure of its police department. Guess who will be on hook. You got it, the property owners.

I use LED PAR Flood lights 100W-125W equivalents outside on a sundown to sun up sensor. LED's are cheap now and the power use ration is about 7 to one of the older incandescent bulbs and a couple on a timer also. No big hit on electric bill. They last years not weeks even the cheap Wally World ones. I laugh when I see people with LED's turning off all their lights. It's not saving them anything they'll notice on their bill. You can light the entire interior consuming about what 2-3 of power the old bulbs had consumed. I'm a retired maintenance mechanic and did the Math LOL.

So ... cops roll up on a house wherein there is supposedly (per dispatch) a “disturbance”.

On arrival, they find the lights out, and no disturbance going on.

An intelligent response to this situation would be to call back to dispatch and ask to verify the location.
