I thought the largest town in the US was New York City.
NYC is a defined as a City, Hempstead is legally the Town of Hempstead with its 800,000 people. Frank Sinatra called Chicago "My kind of Town", but it too is a City.

I don’t believe there are any jurisdictions in California called towns—only cities. The “cities” of Industry and Vernon have large areas but only about 200 residents each. They were incorporated as cities by landowners to promote industrial development.

NYC is a defined as a City, Hempstead is legally the Town of Hempstead with its 800,000 people. Frank Sinatra called Chicago "My kind of Town", but it too is a City. By comparison, Alaska has 740,000 people. So the largest town in America has more people than the largest state in America.
