I thought the largest town in the US was New York City.

NYC is a defined as a City, Hempstead is legally the Town of Hempstead with its 800,000 people. Frank Sinatra called Chicago "My kind of Town", but it too is a City.

LOL...me, too. But Mr. Grok says “it’s classified as a town under New York law, functioning like a township that provides services to its subdivisions. No other U.S. town surpasses it in population.”

Not producing required documents is racist, and causes Global Warming. And it’s homolesbotransqueerbinomiopjobic.

Hell, it worked for them.

It is a technicality of terms. NYC is the largest city by population. Hempstead is the largest town by population. Hempstead is actually made up 22 incorporated villages (one of which is named Hempstead) and 38 hamlet (unincorporated taxing entities.)

Pop: 793,409. It is actually the second largest municipality (cites and towns) in NYS. Every thing in NYS is part of either a town or city. This is the case for most Northeastern state although some have unincorporated state managed areas. Those unincorporated areas have very few people living in them.

Nassau County is actulyy made up of just three towns and two cities. Both cities are failrly small with populations of just 33K and 27K.

Yes. His "girl" is not merely a girl, but a full-fledged woman.

Chicago "My kind of Town", but it too is a City.

And New York City's nickname is the Big Town.

And some have classified it as a fruit (i.e. "Apple")

Largest municipality in the US by area is Sitka Alaska. Population is only 8k but by area nothing is bigger.

To your point,

East side, West side
All around the town
The tots sang 'Ring-a-Rosie'
'London Bridge is falling down!
Boys and girls together
Me and Mamie O'Rorke
We Tripped the light fantastic
On the sidewalks of New York

Moral: Don't trust song lyrics for technical accuracy.

I don’t believe there are any jurisdictions in California called towns—only cities. The “cities” of Industry and Vernon have large areas but only about 200 residents each. They were incorporated as cities by landowners to promote industrial development.

By comparison, Alaska has 740,000 people. So the largest town in America has more people than the largest state in America.

I thought that terms like “city,” “town, “village,” and “hamlet were informal terms used to describe places of varying population density, not technical terms with precise limitations.

In some places (e.g. Alberta, Canada) that is true. But in most states it has to do with things like form of government. So, West Hartford, CT is a "TOWN" with 64,000 people, and the City of Meriden, CT has 61,000 people.
