In 1305, the Scottish rebel William Wallace (made famous by the movie 'Braveheart') was captured and killed by Edward 1 of England (Longshanks().
After his capture, Wallace, a Scottish knight and leader in the First War of Scottish Independence, was tried for treason in London. On August 23, 1305, he was executed by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. His body was then dismembered, and his head was displayed on London Bridge, while his limbs were sent to four locations—Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling, and Perth—to serve as a warning to others.
