When I drove a cab in the 70s in Alexandria, section 8 runs to the liquor store went off the charts at the end of each month when the welfare checks came in.

I used to read Ebony magazine once in a while. Somewhere near the masthead they had a sidebar for potential advertizers, telling them that Ebony readers spent a higher portion of their income on clothing, liquor, tobacco, and cosmetics than readers of other media. Judging by the advertisements, ad buyers believed them. Kools, Seagrams, and Posner.

I drove a yellow cab out of Falls Church, played rock and disco gigs around the metro area, started cab driving around 3am, worked through the rush hour, hit the sack around noon woke up around 5pm, next gig at 8pm wash, rinse, repeat, it was a rough couple of years but I had youth and vigor on my side. Had a laborers job too, when I could squeeze it in.
