Shabana Mahmood was born on 17 September 1980 in Birmingham, the daughter of Zubaida and Mahmood Ahmed. Her parents are of Pakistani descent with roots in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir. She has a twin brother. From 1981 to 1986 she lived with her family in Taif, Saudi Arabia, where her father was working as a civil engineer on desalination.
