Survey finds ‘digital addiction’ soaring among Baby Boomers

A new survey suggests many Baby Boomers are struggling with digital overuse, with nearly half spending more than three hours a day on their smartphones and a significant number experiencing anxiety when disconnected.

The poll, conducted by AddictionResource.net, surveyed 2,000 adults ages 59 to 77 about their digital habits and found signs of emotional dependence, compulsive behavior and difficulty reducing screen time.

Experts say adults who spend more than six hours a day on screens are at increased risk of depression. While screen addiction is not defined by time alone, experts recommend recreational use stay below two hours daily.

People actually get upset that I don’t carry my phone around with me...I refuse to be at everybody’s beck and call.

Peak internet is where you spend all day on line searching for information about internet addiction.

I can’t do that. I use the Google Keep notes app for my shopping list.

I’m 78. I hate my iPhone. I use it for calls and the occasional text to reorder my scripts. That’s it. The rest of the time it sits on the table. At my doctor appointments, I like to look around the waiting room to see how many people are on their phones, ignoring the person who accompanied them, and ignoring their children.

"They’re clearly addicted to Facebook. It’s become the cringiest of the cringe."

I never did Facebook, Instagram, etc. My sister-in-law has been on Facebook for a long time. She used to complain about all the crap people posted to her on Facebook. I told her to get rid of it. "Oh, I keep it to keep track of my grandchildren." She lived across the street from them, and now lives in her daughter's house with them. She used to be normal until she began watching The View every day. Now her own daughter can't stand talking to her. She''s argumentative all the time. I only see her when I go to visit them. They're my brother's family. He passed in 1995.

I tried Parler when Trump got kicked off of Twitter, thinking he might end up there. Then they knocked Parler off the internet. I then signed up for Gab, and Gettr for a while. Trump never showed on either of them. I didn't join Truth Social initially because you could only access it from your phone, and I don't do that crap, so waited until they allowed you to join via your laptop. I wasn't on it very long, and quit all of them. I found them to be a waste of my time. I'd rather sit and read a book, which I do every day. I've usually got four hardback/paperback books going at once. Then I read from two others at night on my Kindle before I go to bed. I don't watch any TV until 8 p.m. or so. Been here for 26 years and counting. This is the only social site I need.

What else should they be doing?

Building the HO model railroad or something else stimulating. I have a nice machine shop, wood shop, and 3D printer. Making stuff, that's the ticket.

Computers for me means C programming on microcontrollers. Have you ever written a compiler from scratch? That does engage the mind.

There’s parents who literally exploit their kids every private moment on social media for clicks, likes, and views. That’s the only job the parents have.

My kids are 2 different generations, late millennial and gen-z.

My millennial is glued to his phone and my gen-z makes fun of him. Gen-z don’t appear to be nearly as stuck on their phones as their predecessors. My younger son doesn’t do Facebook, instagram, any of it. Just texts his friends sometimes, but prefers to hang out in person. Makes sense considering he is the generation that was “locked down” during Covid. He prefers face to face interaction.

I’m hoping this is a shift.

Does reading on a Kindle count as screen time? If so, I’m up to several hours a day when I include FR.

As for cell phones, mine spends about 99% of the time turned off in a drawer. I don’t carry it unless I know I’ll have to make or receive calls. No apps for anything.

What kind of scratch? I am familiar with chicken scratch.

Maybe some programming does resemble chickens scratching.
