I sometimes hear the song like it's a slam not against America, but against the left, and particularly the entertainment industry, being too harsh on Vietnam veterans. Maybe a slam on all of us for not looking out for the veterans.
The song says a veteran can't get a good job because he spent his early adult years fighting a pointless war. So the only job he can do is the refinery near the prison. His brother is MIA in Vietnam (suggesting we didn't do enough to bring home MIA's).

Saying Vietnam was a pointless war is ridiculous. Like saying Korea or WWII was pointless. In all three cases we fought a war to defend independent nations which were invaded by totalitarian militarists who denied those nations their right of existence.
What’s next protesting against police evicting squatters? Or illegal alien invaders.
The rot runs deep and wide.
