I know she is not a jazz bassist but how about an honorable mention for Carol Kaye (Wrecking Crew).
Actually, Carol Kaye was a (bebop) jazz guitarists. Started when she was teenager. She was asked to do a (guitar) session for Sam Cooke, and realized she could make more money on that. She played sessions as a guitarist for seven years, then in 1963, she had to fill in for a bassist that didn't show up, and decided she could be more creative at that. (Popular music is very boring for a jazz guitarist.)
A lot of session musicians started in jazz. Look at the Motown session players. And it's a cakewalk, if you are from playing jazz.
