Looks like a "stripper clip" for a .30 caliber rifle, most likely a bolt action (30-06 or 7.92x57). The clip is different than one for a .303 Enfield or 7.62x54. The rounds are not 7.62x39 or .308, nor 5.56mm).

My friend claimed that those are 8mm rounds, as noted in a discussion he had on Glocktalk. Is this yet another old WW2/WW1 rifle, stolen/borrowed from grandpa, used for the deed? If so, probably not even sighted in. No wonder he missed so badly.
