A friend of the family was a German paratrooper in WWII, I believe his Mauser was a 7mm carbine. I want to find one.

What you’re looking for might be a German G43 carbine which was the most common Paratrooper rifle. The caliber was commonly called 8mm but was technically 7.92 which might be where you heard the “7mm” . There are a few G43’s around but keep your checkbook tuned up. As an auto loader it is a way less common German model. Other countries used 7mm Mauser caliber but not the Krautz for regular duty anyway.
