If Mexico doesn't want to sell Baja California, it would be very easy to recognize a new government there, and secure its borders. Then we can resettle all of the illegal Spanish speakers there.

IIRC, Pat Buchanan pointed out that the US could have bought all of Baja for the money Clinton spent on a bailout of Mexico during a Mexican currency crisis.

Too late to do anything about it now, but it’s interesting to note that the money to buy Baja was already spent, but the US got nothing for it.
