LOL!
There are no routine tourist flights to the Moon. If there were, nobody could miss them.
They would be affordable, too, by the way. Maybe not cheap though doable. Honeymoon stuff.
Well if we are talking about stuff that should have happened in space, but did not. Then consider Project Orion. Begun in 1958, killed in 1964. Reasons: Government interagency infighting, NASA Apollo conflict, perceived treaty obligations, lack of political leadership. “...the first time in modern history that a major expansion of human technology has been suppressed for political reasons.” - Freeman Dyson.
Design and concept for nuclear explosion propelled vehicle. The larger the vehicle, the better the propulsion worked. Radiation shielding was provided by inner-outer hull void filled with water. Crew would have had unlimited access to water for showers, drinking etc.
Concept, design and model built. System worked. Larger the better. Small 10,000 ton vehicle with crew of 150 planned. Speed, as I recall, was something like 3 weeks to Mars.
40 million ton [ equivalent weight to 265 super tankers ] interstellar vehicle next.
Motto: “Mars by 1965, Saturn by 1970.” Would cost same or less than Apollo.
So if you feel deprived of your lunar excursion, imagine how I feel being deprived of exploring the entire solar system and booking passage to another star!
