Simplifying here, but:

Silicon is right below Carbon on the periodic table, and so has similar properties (e.g., # of empty slots in the valence shell (subshells notwithstanding).

Not out of the question to have a silicon-based (rather than carbon-based) life form, given different energy environs. (At least in sci-fi)

Commander Riker, the XO, was a lothario of some renown.

Bedding many aliens species visiting the ship or on a landing party. Ended up with the half Betazoid ships counselor after an off again/on again relationship throughout the series.
