‘New Coke’ was a cover for them to switch out cane sugar for high-fructose corn syrup.

No. The transition started in 1980, with no complaints at the time. People did not distinguish between HFCS and regular corn syrup, and they didn't distinguish between corn syrup and sugar.
I was in high school at the time, and could tell the difference between the Coke in the 28 oz. leaded glass gas station cases, 12 oz. cans, 8 oz leaded glass coke bottles, 16 oz. stubbies, 64 oz glass bottles, the short lived 48 ounce green plastic bottles, and fountain Coke. My brother claimed he could tell the difference between bottling sites.
They were all acceptable, but I preferred the gas station bottles.

Nah. They could have done that switch anyway.
