The Ukraine celebrates 1991 as their independence day because they don’t otherwise have one as they were never a nation before that.

Stupid. So when Israel celebrates its Independence Day, on the 5th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, which commemorates the proclamation of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, it means Israel "never had a nation before that"? Okay
