Delaware was a slave state (although the "free persons of color" outnumbered the slaves in the state at the time of the Civil War) and resisted ending the institution.

All of the 13 original states were slaveholding colonies before the Revolution. Vermont was the first state never to have slavery legal.

Martin van Buren was from New York. His father at one point was a slaveowner.
