I enjoy listening to the Boss Radio soundchecks from that time, it’s the closest thing to a time machine. All kinds of great music, that everyone knew by heart. Now everything is so segmented.
"Chain Gang" - Sam Cooke
"Cherish" - The Association
"Closer to Home" - Grand Funk Railroad
"Come And Get It" - Badfinger
"Crossroads" - Cream (1968 Live)
"Carry On" - CSN&Y (2000 Reunion)
"Without You" - Harry Nilsson - first done by Badfinger.
"Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers - Perhaps the apex of love songs.
Gregg had a great voice, and so talented.
The problem with all of the movements of that time, especially the Civil Rights Movement, was that the Communists were driving the bus.
Wrong. The jazz musicians are the classical geniuses. And we don’t give them any credit.
Well, country and hip hop trade each other off in terms of popularity. But neither of them really adhere to the faith.
Oh I think they’ll be listening to Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc. too.
As Tom Petty said, modern country is just bad rock with a fiddle.
You are welcome. And they had a few different lead singers over time. David Ruffin had left by 1969.
”Kind of funny, I turned 19 the Summer of 1969 and didn’t hear about Woodstock until the movie came out a couple of years later. Not that I would have gone, none of my friends had heard about it either.”
I turned 17 the summer of ’69 . My buddy and I ordered Woodstock tickets which we ended up not needing as it became an open concert by the time we arrived . Lied to my folks and said we had a ride to the festival and back . We hitchhiked from eastern CT round trip !
Now Tom… was a genius. RUNNIN’ DOWN A DREAM is one of my all-time favs. Another one gone too soon.
Chuck Girard just died Aug. 11th. “Who in the world is he?” you ask. He was the founding member (I think) of the group Love Song that contributed to the Jesus movement and the start of contemporary Christian music movement. His songs were very popular but the radio stations refused to play them. Too bad. He had quite a testimony - his dad died when he was 5, I think, of a drug overdose, raised by abusive grand parents, he left home at age 16. He went from drugs and eastern religions to finding faith and answers in Christianity. Perhaps if we had listened to the message of Love Song our nation would be in better shape today. One of his daughters gave a very moving eulogy that’s on Youtube. I saw him a long, long time ago when he was just touring by himself. There’s supposed to be a 3 part special on Amazon Prime videos this Sept. regarding his life.
Well, Berry Gordy wasn’t white, and I don’t think he was fat yet. But think about this. Motown was started by a 30-year old black man in 1959, with $800 ($8600 in 2025 dollars) from family savings, and the label had more no. 1 hits in the 1960s than any label in the world. And they had no stars that were established before they were with Motown.
Motown also had The Funk Brothers.
Probably appropriate for this thread.
The Beatles - The End

Yeah, so? Eras change, the Rock Generation is dying off. Just the way it is.
Just remember, Rock replaced something before it, and before that, something else was replaced. Even rap (or whatever the current trend is) will be replaced by something else one day.
Boomers, you’re not special. (And neither are Gen Xers, my generation).
In the late 90s my wife was working in a bookstore. The 15-year-old daughter of one of her coworkers came in one day, all excited, and said, “Mom! I just found this great new group! Pink Floyd!”
If you’ve never heard it, it’s new to you.
I’ve discovered a lot of bands from the 70s, that I hadn’t heard of before.
So everybody was happy and hopeful in August and dejected and despairing in December?
Maybe it was more that the original 60s kids grew up and grew out of it, and the younger ones recognized that the 60s thing wasn’t really theirs so they eventually gave it up.
