Russia has the natural resources to go it alone in the short term, but any decently educated Russian gets the hell out of Russia so, at any threat of war, Russia ends up short in educated human resources. That is bad in modern warfare.
America had the same problem but we didn’t miss all the Liberal arts majors. Russian education system isn’t real big on liberal arts, hard science STEM education is their focus.
So their loss is pretty significant compared to ours.
Given their reduced population these days, they need to steal American and EU technology, thus NATO membership for them would be bad for us.
