Two people died and 14 others, including two teenagers, were hospitalized after eating sausage and turnip top paninis from a food truck in southwest Italy linked to the country’s second toxic botulism outbreak in a month.

Luigi di Sarno, 52, and Tamara D’Acunto, 45, died within two days of ingesting the tainted sandwiches. Another 14 people were hospitalized with food poisoning, The Telegraph reported.

Di Sarno, an artist, was sent home from the hospital even after complaining he wasn’t feeling well and later died, his sister told the outlet.

All of the victims ate sandwiches from a food truck near the town of Diamante in Calabria, which spans across the toe of Italy’s boot, according to authorities investigating the botulism outbreak.

They each ordered the same meal: a panini topped with grilled sausage and cime di rapa — or turnip tops in English, officials said.

Every day there is at least one new recall right here in the US. Just like everything else under the sun, it is ramping up. Why?

Re: "Food Truck"

My first thought...

Was the vendor an immigrant?

Nope - the owner is a local, in the business for 9 years.

First guess is botulism originated from canned turnip greens.

Oh no! That’s a great sammi!

We have it all the time!

If it was the canned greens, thats horrible!

from Wiki:
“Prevention is primarily by proper food preparation. The toxin, though not the spores, is destroyed by heating it to more than 85 °C (185 °F) for longer than five minutes. The clostridial spores can be destroyed in an autoclave with moist heat (120°C/ 250°F for at least 15 minutes) or dry heat (160°C for 2 hours) or by irradiation. The spores of group I strains are inactivated by heating at 121°C (250°F) for 3 minutes during commercial canning. Spores of group II strains are less heat-resistant, and they are often damaged by 90°C (194°F) for 10 minutes, 85°C for 52 minutes, or 80°C for 270 minutes; however, these treatments may not be sufficient in some foods.”

The US recalls usually have to do with possible peanut dust not included on the list of ingredients or illegals out in the field tainting the veggies with feces.

Mass production- illegal invaders crapping in the fields while picking produce, contaminated water supply systems (recent article about that), lack of thorough I section due to mass produce, lack of controls on home grown and made products. More people in the world, more cases. A lot of the big cases of ecoli come down to Contaminated water at some point in the process.

Eat green beans, they are picked by combines. FYI (Sometimes growing 10 tons per acre)

Who would order something called the ‘tainted sausage and turnip top’ sandwich?
