The $$ for the bridge was mostly donated by the Annenberg family - why it’s called the Wallis Annenberg Bridge.

“The project, which began construction in mid-2022, has been a public-private partnership involving Caltrans, the National Park Service, and the National Wildlife Federation, with significant funding from the Annenberg Foundation.”

Maybe in Northern or Central California - but not in southern California, the mountain lion population has decreased.

“Over the last several decades, the Santa Monica Mountains’s mountain lion population has declined and become genetically isolated, primarily due to the Ventura Freeway that prevents them from moving between the mountains and the Simi Hills to the north. Since 2002, at least a dozen mountain lions have been killed on the freeway. GPS tracking collars show that most approach the freewa.y then turn back.”

Apparently, that area is a known wildlife crossing where a lot of mountain lions and other wildlife have been killed trying to cross the 101 freeway.

The Ventura Freeway has been there since the 60s. The main reason the lion population has declined is that they've taken down the prey base to the point that they're eating porcupines.

I’d rather see the $$ go for a wildlife crossing than the stupid high speed rail boondoggle.

Billions upon billions wasted over 17 years, not a single inch of track has been laid down and not a single train running. It was supposed to be up and functional - between LA and San Francisco in 2020.

Thank God Trump pulled federal funding.

Oh but the animal "lovers" will tell you how mountain lions are just "big babies" and not aggressive at all.

The evil gits lie about other things too.

Fencing makes the crossing the only option.

How many tens of millions will California waste building their mountain lion crossover?

The main issue is that the attendance is atrocious for the mountain lion training classes that teach the big cats how to use the crossings and where they are located. Thankfully, the state still pays the NGO running the program $100,000 per session for the classes, offered 5 days per week, for eternity... with only 88% getting kicked back to Democrat groups and candidates!! And the local judges will all invalidate any order from any government entity that dares to try to end that funding stream.

Where are people suppose to live?

The sky perhaps?

No, stupid people would whine about how bird attacks were justified.

The wildlife crossovers, along with fencing, save many human lives from automobile/wildlife collisions in Oregon. Oregon Hunters Association promotes these crossovers.

This.

I have nuisance deer in my neighborhood. One of my neighbors has a 5 ft fence around her yard. I was looking out the window one day and saw a deer walk up to the fence and with a casual hop jumped over the fence.

Hit a moose with your car and you’re very likely to die. They are so tall that body will go right over the hood and through your windshield.

“So you propose no new human habitations be allowed?”
No, and I wrote no such thing. Humans and wildlife can live in close proximity if the humans conduct themselves with good sense and discipline. I live in a forest chock full of bears, deer, foxes, raccoons, snakes, the occasional coyote, etc. Exterminating everything so I can live in a perfectly “safe space” like some spoiled wokester = No thanks.

“While no doubt...”
Redeveloping the vast areas people have already ruined, instead of abandoning them and destroying virgin areas, is a great idea. I also agree that humans are generally MUCH more dangerous than wildlife. Per newest FBI stats, violent crimes by humans in 2024 totalled almost 227,000 — and that’s just what was reported. In comparison, attacks by wildlife are negligible.

California cases that I remember generally involved: 1) people of small stature or children; 2) mountain biking/running on trails in wilderness parks; and 3) doing so at dawn or dusk. Not putting out hors d’eurves at prime feeding time would obviate most of the problem.

So basically humans should stay inside secure structures?
Living in a bunker, able to go outside only in full day preferably accompanied by or being a large human presumably allowed non-lethal means of “protection”. Phooey!
Considering snakes need only small hole, raccoons can and will tear through window scteening ,chicken wire and even heavier wire such as store bought small animal cages. Deer can and have crashed through glass windows. Bears are strong enough to easily rip through patio screens and flimsy doors.Raccoons tore open a store bought pen and killed a litter of beautiful kittens, destroyed and ruined a $1000 of electronics(knocked down, pooped on).

I reject your version of co-existence.
My version is the dangerous wildlife is chased away or otherwise eliminated from my areas reasonbly close to my home, pets, and domestic animals.

Life on my property was much simpler and safer when coon hunters kept those cute, destructive varmints in check, chicken owners took care of hawks and such, nor were bears, coyotes, and wolves to be seen or heard.

Should have been 10 foot to be sure.
I have had 15 or 16 vehicle/deer collisions ,probably 3 times many close calls. Nothing ljke deer jumping over your hood, and hearing the hooves on the roof!
Now most of these were early morning or evening but one was midday.

I am not a fast driver especially in poor light.

Several vehicles totalled. Many headlights and plastic grill,a couple hoods.

But the deer must be protected from poaching, etc.Phooey!
