Auto racers have had their share of injuries from high-speed crashes over the years, but for Connor Zilisch, danger struck him after a victory.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader broke his collarbone after a hard fall in victory lane at Watkins Glen International, according to the Associated Press.

After his series-leading sixth victory, Zilisch was climbing onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate. He slipped after apparently getting his left foot caught in the driver’s side window netting and tumbled awkwardly onto the asphalt.

— Speedway Digest (@speedwaydigest) August 9, 2025 Zilisch, who turned 19 in July, was taken on a backboard to the trackside medical center and then transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

He posted on X about two hours later that he had a broken collarbone, and that CT scans showed no head injury.

Note to self:

Nets & gravity don’t mix (except for water extraction).

Tough break.

Maybe you hit on the key reason: You are naturally energetic, (maybe optimistic too?) and see no reason to sit and wait for things to happen.

To much crap advertising on the roof of the car. No room to stand up on top so he was trying to stand on the edge. Stupid ass ads EVERYWHERE! Ridiculous.

Looks like it was a Red Bull. I guess they don't give you wings after all.

False advertising.

Back in the Day. Rodeo at Talladega.

NEW SAFETY EQUIPMENT:

Along the same mindset as the HANS- HEAD AND NECK Support several pieces of New Safety Equipment will be Developed, Tested and become Mandatory.

They will be called:

FATS Foot AND Toe Support:

CASS COLLARBONE AND SHOULDER Shield:

Pending the results from Laboratory and Field Research additional Equipment may be combined with the existing and new technologies may be added. Those would be:
Industrial Bubble Wrap with Velcro Tabs and Kevlar with good old Asbestos Blanket as a final outer layers.
Final results will show that the New Equipment will add additional weight to the Driver and Vehicle the Drivers side door will be modified to accommodate a hinge at the bottom of the door and the entire assembly will fold down to provide a platform for the Driver to stand on for celebration post-race. This will allow any falls to be very short distances to enhance safety.

The entire package will be called The Zilisch Safety System. There will be a provision that Driver's Helmet will be required to remain on and Chin Strap must be used...

That would mean Daytona, Portland, and Madison, IL at minimum.

He would likely be racing starting at Bristol.
