The money went to scientists, engineers, and manufacturers who, in turn, bought homes, raised families, and bought groceries and cars. The money was not wasted. It supported lives well spent.

I won’t disagree. But I would prefer that the money be spent on things that are obviously practical. Disease research, repairing bridges, upgrading VA hospitals, etc.
Don’t get me wrong. Maybe some day spending billions to colonize the Moon will be a practical thing. But as long as it’s only a “maybe”, I’d spend the money somewhere else.
And that includes research into practical things.
