I read a lot but not fiction. I read history and historical biographies. Reading is a waste of time if one doesn’t learn something.
The article mentions this social media trend of posting photos of “Hot Dudes Reading”. Dowd seems to not realize or intentionally leaves out the first word is what is most important. The last word is just a cherry on top.
NY Times fiction Mo Do not sexy
Men like books that are generally productive in nature, not simply for pleasure.
So she finds gays erotic?
Check it out, Laz.
Amen! I think you have to turn in your man-card for reading anything turned out recently. Endlessly-emoting vampires and female-focused porn are all there seems to be anymore (or, at least, all “they” talk about).
Give me David Drake and “Hammer’s Slammers”. I want Kenneth Robeson and his “Doc Savage”, but only after I get my teeth into Neville Grant and “The Spider”. And throw at me all the speculative sci-fi from the pulps to the ‘80s you can find (William Gibson and “Neuromancer” work, even though Hollywood is making it gay-oriented in a month or two).
They can have all their wedding angst, relationship paranoia, and “Hunger Games” money grabs and be welcome to ‘em.
“Attention, Men: Books Are Sexy!”
Attention, Men: Boobs Are Sexy!
There, fixed it (as if we didn’t know)
Nobody is writing for men, which could be attributed to nobody is publishing books men want to read. Tom Clancy and Michael Chrichton have not yet been replaced.
I’m mostly reading noir. Max Allan Collins but that vein is almost played out.
Translation: Books sales are declining. Blame men.
...and by Fall, he came out.
“one of the most erotic things I ever heard. A man I know said he was reading all the novels of Jane Austen in one summer.”
Maureen’s gaydar is off.
I guess that she has never heard of reading used books? There are so many great books written prior to the year 2000 than I will ever be able to read in my lifetime.
I have no need to support the current publishing industry which has no problem in displaying it’s hate for me.
This man reads. Reads a lot. Fiction, nonfiction, I don’t care. But I must say that the only female authors I’ve ever enjoyed are Harper Lee and Joan Didion. And the novels of Susan Sonntag are crap.
Didn’t know MoDo was still active. Been a long time since she’s been posted here. Does the CZJ rule still apply?

Being semi-retired, I spend much of my day reading. Bible and theology in the morning. History and natural science in the afternoon. Classic literary fiction in the evening. I read good, enriching, thought-provoking works. I don’t have time to waste on fluff and junk. My current to-read list should keep me busy for the next couple of years.
I must be the sexiest semi-retired man alive.
MoDo and the harpies at NYT would complain men read too much.
