Mrs. Augie digs her cannas and elephant ears after they've been bitten by the first frost of fall, knocks the extra soil off the root balls, cuts the annual growth off, then tosses the roots in a feed sack and stores them in the bomb room over winter.
She replants them in early May. It's a little bit of work but it saves a ton of money not having to buy new ones every year - she usually puts out 25-30 cannas and a dozen-ish elephant ears.
