The Brief

The national average cost of home insurance is up 9% compared to two years ago, according to Bankrate.

The state with the highest average home insurance cost is Louisiana.

California saw the fastest increase in home insurance.

Just like almost everything else, the cost of home insurance is up.

Bankrate recently compiled the average home insurance cost for each state, with the national average landing at $2,470.

By the numbers:

The average cost of home insurance has increased 9% since 2023, according to Bankrate.

California saw the fastest increase between 2023 and 2025, but that doesn’t mean it ranked the highest.

The state that had the highest average cost for home insurance was Louisiana at $6,274, and much of that is due to extreme weather conditions.

Coming in second was Nebraska at $6,425 and Florida at $5,735, both of which also experience severe weather.

“Louisiana and Florida are frequently struck by hurricanes, while Nebraska homes are at risk for tornado and hail damage. Extreme weather means more home insurance claims and higher premiums,” Bankrate said.

Bankrate’s data took into account married homeowners with homes built in 2015, 2016 and 2017 that had good credit and the following coverage:

Coverage A, Dwelling: $300,000
Coverage B, Other Structures: $30,000
Coverage C, Personal Property: $150,000
Coverage D, Loss of Use: $60,000
Coverage E, Liability: $500,000
Coverage F, Medical Payments: $1,000

My own story/opinion:

We have home and auto insurance through Costco (for at least 15 years) and they have treated us well. I believe it is Connect Insurance.

We live in the county (further away from hydrants and fire departments) and virtually in the Bridger mountain range where 17 homes were lost 5 to 7 years ago (on the eastern slope, however the fire was coming down the western slope so I was piling up computers, documents, etc.up by the door ready to bug-out, thankfully the air tankers arrived and our homes were safe) — in essence since then we are classified as a ‘wild fire’ zone and insurance rates have increased.

Our friends from Georgia have a log cabin two miles north of us and they now pay over $10,000 per year for home insurance.

Our house is small (less than 1,000 sq. ft.) and Connect at our last billing listed our home insurance at $5,400 BEFORE discounts.

Simple discounts: deadbolts, smoke alarms and the like but also a discount for time with the company.

Our bottom line was a bit less than $1,800!

I have no direct ownership of Costco or Connect insurance (perhaps through a mutual fund?) but I do recommend them.

Thanks for your post.
