For those who aren't familiar, a SCIF is a physically and electronically secure environment constructed to protect TS/SCI information from unauthorized access, eavesdropping, or other compromise.
TS/SCI stands for Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information. Top Secret is the highest level of security classification. Unauthorized disclosure could cause exceptionally grave damage to national security.
SCI is a subset of Top Secret information. It requires additional access controls due to its extreme sensitivity. SCI is divided into compartments, each protecting specific types of intelligence such as signals intelligence (SIGINT) and human intelligence (HUMINT). Access is granted only to those with a need-to-know within a specific compartment, even if they hold a TS clearance.
Examples of TS/SCI Information:
1) Friendly Cryptography, aka the keys to the kingdom.
2) Intelligence on foreign military capabilities, covert operations, or nuclear programs.
3) Sensitive data from satellites, intercepted communications, or human sources.
4) Classified plans for military operations.
5) Cybersecurity protocols and operations.
As a personal aside, I've found that almost all TS/SCI material falls into three groups.
1) Mind numbingly boring (the largest group)
2) Piss-your-pants frightening (the smallest)
3) Blessedly comforting. (This would be #2 for the enemy)
